John McArthur was fluent in French (Second Empire). His Hôtel de Ville opened in 1901 with crested and dormered mansard roofs, paired columns, Doric and Corinthian entablatures, acropodiums, keystoned arches, and vermiculated quoins. C’est magnifique!
